School-Age Care

Before- and after-school care programs, plus summer and school-break care, for children ages 5 to 12.

School-age care covers supervision, academic support, and enrichment activities for elementary-school children outside of school hours, including before school (6:30 AM to 8:30 AM), after school (3:00 PM to 6:30 PM), early release days, teacher in-service days, and school vacation weeks. Summer coverage (roughly 10 to 12 weeks) is usually a separate product often organized as full-day camp programming. The U.S. Department of Labor National Database of Childcare Prices tracks before- and after-school care costs separately, with median annual costs generally the lowest of any age category because the program covers fewer hours per day during the school year. Typical before- and after-school care runs $5,000 to $9,000 annually in most counties, while full summer camp coverage can add $3,000 to $8,000 for a 10-week season. Providers include school-district-operated programs, YMCA and Boys and Girls Clubs, private community centers, and childcare centers that also serve younger children. Programs often include homework help, snack, outdoor play, STEM activities, and enrichment classes like art, music, or coding. Federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants fund approximately 1.7 million school-age after-school slots, primarily for low-income students at Title I schools. Staff-to-child ratios are the highest of any age group, typically 1:10 to 1:15, though many states require lower ratios for children under 8. Demand for school-age care exceeds supply in many communities, particularly in rural areas and during summer; an Afterschool Alliance survey estimates that for every child enrolled in an after-school program, three more children would participate if a program were available to them. The end of after-school care eligibility at age 12 or 13 creates a well-documented "middle-school gap" when many parents must choose between leaving tweens home alone or reducing work hours.
